Freighters are a type of ship commonly used by various independent systems to transport goods and merchandise to other star systems to be sold.
In the Pre-Alliance days pirates used modified Freighters to extort and destroy shipping heading towards the new colonies. Scatha, Apulu and Hesta modified serveral Freighters to be used as troop transports.
The colony of Kosatka briefly used a modified freighter as a defence ship while a delegation was sent back to Old Earth/the Old Colonies to secure some warships.
