Asima Marphissa is a former Syndicate officer who aided in overthrowing the Syndicate presence in Midway. She is currently in command of the Midway Flotilla.

Biography[]

Early career and Midway's Rebellion[]

Asima Marphissa starts the series as an Executive on the Syndicate Worlds Mobile Forces Heavy Cruiser C-448, later renamed Manticore. She assists then CEO Iceni in the pacification of the Internal Security Service agents, aka "snakes", from the ship even killing the Senior snake in charge herself by cutting his throat with a knife. Marphissa reveals that she has no love for the Internal Security Service as they arrested and killed her brother during interrogation on charges of treason by a Sub-CEO who wanted her brother's position. This resulted in Marphissa's exile to Midway, but not before the Sub-CEO died of an "unfortunate accident" implied to be caused by Marphissa. This impresses CEO Iceni who starts to groom Marphissa for command due to her competence. Iceni promotes Marphissa to Sub-CEO and puts her in charge over a more senior, though significantly less qualified, Sub-CEO Akiri much to his disdain. An assassination attempt that Marphissa survives, sees the death of Sub-CEO Akiri, making the chain of command much more clear. Sub-CEO Marphissa is now second in the Mobile Forces only to CEO Iceni and assists in the capture of the Battleship hidden away in the Kane star system. By the end of the first book, the newly christened Kommodor Marphissa is placed in command of the Midway Flotilla.

Characteristics[]

Asima Marphissa is a smart fleet officer who learns more and more about command, formations, tactics and strategy with each battle and through her growing friendship with Honore Bradamont the former commander of the Battle Cruiser Dragon in the Alliance First Fleet. Marphissa, having lost her brother due to the treachery inherent in the Syndic system, and with the exception of President Iceni and General Drakon, has very little love for senior leadership with in the Syndicate, and no love whatsoever for Snakes. She really does hate the syndic system and is fiercely loyal to the people of Midway, truly meaning it when she utters the phrase "For the People." She is also fiercely loyal to President Iceni, but not so much so that she would follow orders to attack their own civilians. Marphissa also see's Iceni as being the primary leader of Midway only gaining greater respect for General Drakon and the interplay of tactics between Fleet and Ground Forces in later novels of The Lost Stars series.
